3. Important information about ICE actions: It is important to remember that immigration actions often focus on people who have final orders of removal or who have committed serious crimes. While it’s understandable to be concerned, we want you to know that not all undocumented people are the primary target of these raids. Our goal is to provide them with the correct information and help them understand their rights and options.

4. What to do if ICE comes to your home: You have constitutional rights, regardless of your immigration status:

  • DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR if an immigration agent is knocking on the door.
  • DO NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS from an immigration agent if he tries to talk to you. You have the right to remain silent.
  • DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING without first talking to a lawyer. You have the right to talk to a lawyer.
  • If you are outside your home, ask the agent if you are free to leave and if they say yes, leave calmly.

For even more protection, here is a card you can print and share with your family and friends to take with you and give to an immigration officer in case of a raid. The card explains to the officer that you are exercising your constitutional right to remain silent and not let the officer enter your home without a warrant. If the officer is at the door, you can slide this card under the door when you insist on seeing the warrant.

5. Stay calm and courteous: Always remain polite and courteous when exercising your constitutional rights. If you are detained, do not physically resist or escalate the situation with the officer. Just insist on talking to an attorney and then remain silent. For everyone’s safety, please do not run away from any law enforcement officer, whether on foot or especially by car. This can endanger someone’s life. Additionally, fleeing from a law enforcement officer is generally considered a felony in and of itself. When you find yourself in a difficult situation, it’s best not to make it worse.

6. Should I sign my deportation order if I am detained by immigration authorities? The answer is absolutely no!
